Shaklee Go Clean Review & Giveaway!

Anyone else getting the itch to do some spring cleaning? There is something about the warmer weather that makes me want to open all the windows and clear the clutter. I would probably have the house completely reorganized if I had the available spoons! Instead I am looking for energy-saving and cost-saving ways to get things cleaned & organized!

As a spoonie and a mom, not only am I concerned about performance and cost of products but I am also concerned about the chemicals in products. The jury is still undecided on how big of a role, if any, chemicals and toxins play in chronic illness. I have tried difference eco-friendly products on the market but never had any really good results so I’ve stuck with mainline products. This is a picture of what was under my sink:

Before look at cleaning products

I pretty much have at least 2 products that I use per room in our house. As a part of my job, I have had to sit through Haz-Mat sessions and learned about various chemicals and their dangers so I definitely was uneasy knowing some of those chemicals are in my household cleaners as well. Especially now that Abby is extremely mobile and extremely curious about trying anything and everything new.

I was very excited to try the Shaklee Go Clean line of products in our house! Knowing that the dangerous chemicals were out of my house definitely helped me breathe a sigh of relief. I also loved seeing how few products I needed in comparison. In addition of not having the nasty chemicals, by reusing product bottles you are saving space in the landfill and eliminating 248 pounds of greenhouse gas with just one kit! I definitely loved the new replacements:

Of course, the next big question was how the products worked and I can honestly say the answer is great! I don’t feel like I have to use any more product to make up for the missing chemicals (which I have found with other “green” brands in the past). I have used every product at least once and I am very satisfied with how these products have worked in our home!

Review: Home-Ec 101

As much as IHome Ec 101 wish I was a domestic diva, I’m not. I need a little help in that department. I try to be organized but it often falls to the wayside when I’m busy or flaring. I try to keep a clean house but honestly there are a lot of things I’m not sure what to do or how to do it (for example: when we moved to our new house, we got a new stove with the self-cleaning feature and I must be a moron but I have no idea how to use it – do I just push the button?). And being new homeowners, Hubs and I are trying to be handy when it comes to things around the house but again we’re still in the learning process.

I don’t want to go out and buy a gazillion books. My blog reader has gotten full of of home blogs (which are fabulous don’t get me wrong) but I am looking for a one-stop-shop where I can find resources on basic home issues.

Needless to say, when the opportunity came open to apply to review Home-Ec 101, I eagerly applied and thankfully was chosen.

Written by a fellow blogger Heather Soles, Home-Ec 101: Skills for Everyday Living is just what I was looking for. The layout is simple and clean. There could be more pictures but the text is broken up pleasantly with charts and bubbles. The text is very easy to read and the language is very conversation as if you were sitting down at the kitchen table chatting. There is a welcome amount of humor which is great (unlike some sterile home books I have flipped through). The book is broken up into 4 categories – Clean It, Wash It, Fix It, and Cook It – which make things easy to find. In addition to providing general information of the given topics, there are also inserts from readers asking questions that I think many of us find ourselves asking at one point or another and its nice to now have a resource in which to turn! Heather also includes 4 extremely helpful appendices which includes lists for homemade cleaning solutions, dangerous chemical combinations, a emergency preparedness checklist, and a measurements conversion chart.

All in all, I think this is a great book! It would be great to give to a college graduate or newly married couple setting up their first apartment or house but it is perfectly applicable to every household. I only wish I had found this book and Heather’s site Home-Ec101.com sooner!

**Disclaimer: I was chosen for this review through the One2One Network and was provided a copy of the book to review free of charge. All opinions are 100% my own.**

My Latest Source of Inspiration

I need another webpage to be addicted to like I need a new hole in my head but if you need a source of inspiration (whether it be for home, DIY, food, or anything), you really need to check out Pinterest.

It reminds me somewhat of weheartit.com (or Tumblr) as you can search for topics and come up with a gazillion pictures and you can seriously lose track of time but this allows you to create pinboards of inspiration. I’ve got boards for our house, the playroom, quotes, and even shoes!

I could seriously spend HOURS looking at all of the different pictures. Just a word of warning: be careful searching for tattoo. You get some seriously scary pics! YIKES! LOL :)

You can request membership to Pinterest or I have a couple of invites! If you are already on there, let me know so I can follow! My username is newkindofnormal!

Enjoy!
