Summer Makeup Essentials!

As much as I love the beach, summer is not my favorite season. Its hot and sticky. I am definitely not one of the ladies that just “glistens.” I sweat. A lot. My face gets all red. The lovely humidity of the South makes you feel grungy even if you’ve just stepped out of the shower. And then there is the sunburns. The joy of sunburns.

Despite my sometimes disdain for this time of year, I have discovered some great makeup products to have in your stash to look great even in the heat.

Summer Makeup Essentials

1. Revlon Photoready BB Cream

BB Cream is a wonderful creation that helps smooth out some imperfections and protect your skin in a lightweight formula. I picked up this Revlon Photoready BB Cream and am in love. It is great to throw on if you are heading to the beach or another activity where you don’t want to wear a full face of makeup but want to even out your skin tone a bit and have a little bit of coverage. I also love the Garnier BB Cream Renew Miracle Skin Perfector (which is raved about by beauty gurus on blogs and YouTube which you probably already know) and I think the only thing that knocks the Revlon BB Cream into the top spot is providing SPF 30 instead of SPF 15 found in the Garnier.

2. Cover Girl Outlast Stay Fabulous 3-in-1 Foundation

If you need to a full coverage foundation, this Cover Girl Outlast Stay Fabulous 3-in-1 Foundation is the way to go. This is another product that is all over YouTube and beauty blogs but I was a little bit hesitant to try it out as I wasn’t sure it would be worth the hype. It is. It is a great full coverage foundation but it isn’t heavy or cakey. This foundation also has primer and concealer built in so its pretty much a one stop shop. It also has SPF 20 which is nice and I love that they actually have a shade light enough to match my uber-fair skin.

3. Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circle Treatment

We all know as a spoonie that we may not always get enough beauty sleep and rock the dark circles so we may need a little extra coverage under the eyes. If this describes you, you need to try this Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circle Treatment. This may be one of my most prized possessions in my makeup bag. I use the Brighten shade under my eyes and the Fair shade to help cover extra redness in my cheeks if I am rocking the butterfly rash.

4. Physicians Formula CCC Powder

If you need to set your foundation and concealer, I think the Physicians Formula CCC Correct + Conceal + Cover Powder is a great option! It is a product that can be used on its own or over a base. It does a great job of evening your skin tone and concealing redness as well as providing SPF 30 protection. Physicians Formula also has a CCC cream and concealer in the product line but I have not tried them yet but definitely plan to check them out when I run out of my current products.

5. Cover Girl TruMagic Sunkisser Bronzer

Summer is definitely the perfect time to try out cream products and they definitely seem to be the products that I reach for the most this time of year. The Cover Girl TruMagic Sunkisser is a cream bronzer and works great for contouring and adding a sun-kissed glow. As I have mentioned, I am very fair so I use a light hand when applying. It is a light formula which allows you to build up to the color you are going for. I use my Real Techniques Stipple Brush or Complexion Sponge to apply and blend out.

6. Revlon Photoready Cream Blush

In keeping with the cream theme, the Revlon Photoready Cream Blush is a fun addition to your makeup bag. I picked up the shade Coral Reef on a whim after passing by a makeup clearance bin. I had never tried a cream blush before and the color looked a bit bright but decided to go for it and I am so glad I did. Like the bronzer I mentioned, the blush is a lightweight formula that allows you to build up to the color you are looking for. You can make a light wash of color or make your cheeks pop with color. I went back and picked up another shade called Flushed, which is more of a bright pink.

7. ELF Essentials Shimmering Facial Whip

Until I started watching YouTube channels and following more style/beauty blogs, I had absolutely no idea what contouring meant. I drove a Contour but hardly think they have anything in common. If you are a contouring-newbie like me, the basics of contouring is using the combination of bronzer, blush, and a highlight to add definition to your face. I have already shared about the first two components but if you are looking for a great cream highlighter, look no further than the ELF Essentials Shimmering Facial Whip. This product instantly brightens and soothes skin thanks to a healthy dose of Vitamin E.  It can be used on top of cheekbones, under your eye brows, or in the inner corner of your eye to add some radiance to your skin. This product has been described by many as an exact dupe to the Benefit High Beam highlighter which retails for $26. The ELF highlighter rings in at a whopping $1. Isn’t that awesome?

8. Maybelline Define-A-Brow Eyebrow Pencil

In my opinion, having well-groomed eyebrows can completely enhance your face. There are so many options on the market for your eyebrows including pencils, powders, waxes, or gels and in the summer, it is definitely important to find a waterproof version. I would hate for a wave to take off my eyebrows! Kidding. Sort of. The Maybelline Define-A-Brow Eyebrow pencil is a great option and has a brow comb on the end which helps blend color to look more natural.

9. Physicians Formula Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Eyeliner & Serum

I love, love, love the look of winged eyeliner but have never been able to get the hang of it. I tried various pencils, gels, and liquid liners without any luck but discovered the Physicians Formula Eye Booster 2-in-! Lash Boosting Eyeliner & Serum and haven’t looked back since. It says that it is supposed to help your lashes grow thicker but I haven’t noticed any major changes (but I can’t say I’ve paid too close of attention either). I think the formula and design of the tip are the perfect combo and allow you to create a thin or thick line and is smudge and water resistant which makes it perfect for summer. My only complaint would be that there aren’t enough colors! The Ultra Black is my favorite but I would love to see additional colors outside of brown and black added to the line!

10. Maybelline Eye Studio Color Tattoos Eyeshadow

Cream products are not only great for your cheeks in the summer but also your eyes. The Maybelline Eye Studio Color Tattoo Eyeshadows are amazing as an eyeshadow base to enhance color but are also great on their own! The formula is a cream gel which helps color stay vibrant longer and prevents creasing. There are many color options from neutral to bold. My current favorites are Barely Branded and Tough As Taupe.

11. L’Oreal Voluminous Waterproof Miss Manga Mascara

If there are two things that I always have on when I leave the house, they would be a BB cream and mascara. I am all about full, dramatic lashes. The more the better! I typically always use a waterproof mascara but definitely this time of year. The L’Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black Mascara has been my holy grail mascara but gave the new L’Oreal Voluminous Waterproof Miss Mange Mascara a try. I think the Miss Manga is great for summer as it adds a lot of volume to your lashes without looking overdramatic for the beach or other summer activities.

12. NYX Macaron Lippies

If there is ever a time to wear fun, funky lip colors, it would be summer! I absolutely love the NYX Cosmetics Macaron Lippies that were released earlier this year. I own four of the colors (Violet, Orange Blossom, Blue Velvet and Chambord) but I know these colors aren’t for everyone so I also recommend the NYX Butter Lipsticks and Glosses.

There you have it folks! My Summer Makeup Essentials list is complete!
