Tell us a little about yourself (just a short bio):
My name is Alicia and I am 45 years old and a mom of two, Aidan turns 7 on Sunday, Rori is 5. I homeschool them while my husband works
What is your diagnosis (or diagnoses):
Asthma since age 5
How long did it take you did get diagnosed from the onset of symptoms to the official diagnosis?
I was 5 and had pneumonia and when I was out of the hospital I kept wheezing and coughing. My mom took me to dr and they diagnosed the asthma.
What do you consider the most important factors in finding the right doctor?
It took YEARS to find the right dr. I was in and out of hospital and my dr gave up on me when I was 11 and told my mom I’d either outgrow it or eventually die from it. I was in my 30′s before I found someone to put me on the right medicine. Before that I’d been on so many medicines that didn’t work, I lived on Primatene Mist for years. Finally in December of 2003, I ended up in ICU after a bad attack, and when I asked the dr about Advair, he agreed.
What has been the hardest thing about facing chronic illness?
If it’s something someone can’t see, they don’t understand it.
What is something positive that happened as a result of your illness?
I’ve learned my strengths and weaknesses.
If you had to give one piece of advice to a newly diagnosed spoonie, what would it be?
Take it one day at a time. Remember that if God brought you to it, He will bring you through it.
How can we follow you?
