Thanksgiving Blessings

Thanksgiving Blessings

We made it home Saturday from a 4 day trip to Surfside Beach for Thanksgiving! My parents now own a condo down there so when they invited us to join then for the holiday there was no way we were going to say no! It also ended up that Hubs’ family was also going to celebrate at the beach and they were less than 5 miles away! It was so much fun to have BOTH families nearby!

The blessing in disguise of the trip was having no data service. If you were lucky, you could get phone calls but once you tried email, Facebook, or twitter you got nada which was not dependent on which provider you had so it was nice that we all got to be unplugged for a couple days! I had wanted to put up a couple more posts last week but in the end, I will take the time with family! We have another road trip coming up on Thursday to my parents in VA! Not looking forward to more time in the car (so I’m asking for tips on my Facebook page!) but I am looking forward to seeing my extended family! It is the only time that the 3 of us kids will be able to be together for the holidays! I will also get to see my grandparents (A’s great grandparents!) who I have not seen for over a year!

Here are a couple shots from our wonderful time at the shore:

5 More Lessons from Disney

5 More Lessons from Disney

Here are a couple more lessons I picked up on our trip!

6- Try to spread your days out if possible, especially if you are a spoonie or have a small child. We opted to get 6 day passes versus 4 day passes for several reasons – 1) the cost really wasn’t that different (when we purchases our tickets there was only a $25 price difference between the 4 day & 6 day passes) and 2) this allowed us to freedom of spending as much or as little time in the parks as we wanted. Because we knew we had 6 days, we didn’t feel the pressure to cram seeing all of the Magic Kingdom in one day. It also gave us the freedom of having shorter days if we felt like it (most days we were on the shuttle to the parks at 9 and home by 2:30 except for Animal Kingdom). I know that I could not have handled full days and I definitely know Abby would have been worn out. She was knocked out by the time we left every day! Plus it gave us the freedom to enjoy the relaxing pool and lazy river in the evening at the resort!

7- Make time for the non-ride attractions. Being post-op and having a toddler, we didn’t have the option of the big rides this go-round (thinking Everest, Space Mountain, etc) so it encouraged us to explore some of the other options the parks have to offer. If you go to the Animal Kingdom, you MUST  go see the Lion King & Finding Nemo shows! Fantastic! Animal Kingdom also offers a lot of walking trails which I have heard are definitely worth it (we didn’t do the trails since I wanted to give my poor husband a break pushing me around). One of Abby’s favorite places was the Boneyard at Animal Kingdom which combined two of her favorite things: slides and dinosaurs. How can you not smile when you see this face?

Another favorite at the Magic Kingdom was Mickey’s Philharmonic! She actually cried when it was over!

8- Pass over the camera. Since I was blessed with my new DSLR, I tend to find myself doing most of the picture taking. Not that I have mastered the camera by any stretch of the imagination but I am more comfortable with it than John so I think that’s why I tend to be the one behind the camera. It showed on this vacation. We’ve got loads of the most wonderful pictures of Abby and Daddy, as well as pictures with my family but unfortunately I’ve found myself in very few of them which is a bit sad! So definitely remember to pass the camera every so often! P.S. The cast members of Disney are awesome at taking pictures using your camera at Character Spots (as well as the professional putting images on your PhotoPass).

9- Enjoy the wonder through the eyes of your child! It has been a long time since I had been to Disney (1988 to be exact) so quite a bit had changed and it was almost like it was a first-time trip for myself but watching Abby take in all the sights was amazing! I had to remind myself of this the night of the Electric Parade. I really wanted to catch some good shots but I couldn’t get the settings right on my camera and the longer I fooled with it, the more I realized how much I was missing! So instead I put the camera aside and enjoyed watching Abby watch the parade – something I would have missed if I had stayed behind the camera!  I loved watching her eyes light up when she got to meet Tiana in person or how big she smiled as she gave Buzz Lightyear a high-five. I loved watching the wonder as we watched the puppeteers bring Finding Nemo to life. I loved how excited she got to ride Dumbo or the Triceratop Spin or even the PeopleMover (which she thought was a big deal).

10- Finally – enjoy yourself! Before this trip I never understood why families would choose to go back to Disney year after year. I mean, don’t you want variety?! Now I know why. There is something truly magical about Disney and there is just something about it that brings family together. John is not a huge theme park roller-coaster guy but he even loves Disney. My parents are huge Disney fans and love going just the two of them (of course they absolutely loved having both grandbabies on this trip!). Even with all of the obstacles (pain, being post-op, etc) I had the most wonderful time and am already counting down to our next trip! Disney 2013!

5 Things I Learned On Our Disney Vacation

5 Things I Learned On Our Disney Vacation

It’s definitely taken me longer than I anticipated to get this blog posted but hopefully it will be worth the wait :)

1- If you have an early flight out, it is totally worth it to stay in a hotel close to the airport. We are only an hour away from the airport that we were flying out of but with an 8am arrival time, it would have meant leaving the house before 7am which meant getting up by 6am and well, we’re just not morning people so we found a nearby hotel to stay the night. We got to start our vacation a day early (we dropped off the dogs early and spent the day shopping and swimming!). The other bonus was that the hotel offered free shuttle service to and from the airport so we were able to leave our car at the hotel for the week so we didn’t have to pay for parking at the airport so the room basically paid for itself!

2- Snacks and stickers are essential for flying with a toddler.  This vacation was Abby’s first experience on a plan and honestly we were not sure what to expect. Since she’s over 2, she was not able to ride in our lap so she had her own seat in between us. We flew Allegient which has open seating (unless you pay the upcharge for an assigned seat) but thankfully they have family boarding so if you have a child under 7 you get to board pretty early. Abby happily sat in between us playing with her seatbelt while we waited for takeoff. The downfall of boarding early is having to sit so long as it didn’t take Abby long to get bored which is where snacks came in. I think between the waiting and the take off she ate three packs of fruit snacks but hey, it got us through takeoff without tears. The flight down she did wonderful. For us to drive to Orlando, it would take about 12 hours. Our flight was only 1 hour but because our flight was only an hour, we weren’t leveled off for more than 15 minutes so it didn’t give much time to move around or time to pull out the DVD player since as soon as you got a movie started it was time to pack it back up for the descent. Stickers were a great distraction, especially the game of putting stickers on Mommy. This is what I looked like by the time we touched down:

Unfortunately, the plane ride back was not as successful as a 5:30am airport arrival time does not work well with toddlers and the hour flight consisted of about 40 minutes of crying.

3- If you are concerned with your energy and/or pain management, it is totally worth it to rent wheels. We traveled at just over 4 weeks post-op which obviously isn’t ideal but since this was an entire family vacation it was kind of difficult to reschedule since we had been planning for a year. I went back and forth over the idea but in the end we figured if I could save energy by not walking, then I would have more energy to actually enjoy the parks. Since we were traveling outside of the peak season, I just rented directly from Disney since I wasn’t worried that they would run out (if you are traveling during peak season, it may be worth it to rent from an outside company). I paid one price for a flat 6 day rental and just had to show my receipt at the gate so I didn’t have to wait in line every day. Disney is super accommodating and make the process a pleasant experience. Many of the parks had wheelchairs available at the parking lots that you could use to get into the park where you traded for a park chair as some of the shuttle lots were a distance from the front gates. As far as getting on rides, we just parked my chair and walked through line. I didn’t feel the need to be wheeled right up to the ride. It also came in handy when transporting a sleeping kid out of the park! She was zonked by leaving time everyday!

4. Disney is the place to go if you or your child has food allergiesNo joke. It was dietary heaven! They work hard to provide a pleasant dining experience for ALL of their guests. One meal that I have missed terribly since my Celiac diagnosis was barbeque so when I discovered that they had a gluten-free meal which included a barbeque sandwich I was thrilled! When you have a food allergy and place your order, a manager comes out to handle your request and they are the only one who handles your food. They see the order from start to finish to avoid chances of cross contamination. You may wait a little longer for your food to be prepared but it is so worth it! I was able to enjoy a barbeque sandwich, fries, and a brownie without fear of gluten contamination and it was HEAVEN! We ate at Flame Tree BBQ both times we were at Animal Kingdom (we skipped meals at the other parks because of shuttle times). If you want more gluten-free dining options at all of the parks, you can check out this gluten-free dining guide.

5.  Decide which characters you want to meet the most and try to meet them early in your trip. We totally lucked out and got to meet Mickey & the gang and the Princesses in the first two days of our trip so the rest of the trip anyone else we happened to meet was a perk! We really lucked out being in the off-season and had less than a 5 minute wait to meet Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy & Pluto and waited maybe 10 to meet Aurora, Belle, and Cinderella as we went to both character spots first thing when we arrived at the parks. Tiana was also on our “must see” list and were able to see her in less than 5 too!  We were able to meet tons of characters but it was nice knowing that we had to “big ones” out of the way so if we forgot the autograph book later in the week, it was ok. Abby’s top 3 were Minnie, Tiana, and Buzz Lightyear. The expression on her face when she got to meet Buzz was priceless!

I will be back on Thursday to share more things I learned while visiting The Mouse!
